Common Therapy Questions Answered

Welcome to Nicole Kauk Counseling! I understand that seeking therapy can bring up many questions. Below are answers to some common inquiries to help you feel more informed and comfortable. If you have any other questions or concerns, don’t hesitate to reach out.

1. What types of counseling do you offer?

I offer a variety of counseling services, including:

  • Individual Therapy: One-on-one sessions to address personal challenges, mental health concerns, or personal growth.
  • Couples Therapy: Help with relationship issues, communication challenges, and conflict resolution.
  • Specialized Therapy: I also offer therapy for trauma, grief, Adult ADHD, and more.

2. How do I know if therapy is right for me?

If you’re feeling overwhelmed, experiencing emotional distress, or finding it difficult to manage life’s challenges, therapy can be a valuable tool for gaining clarity, insight, and support. It’s normal to feel uncertain, but speaking with a professional can help you understand your emotions and develop coping strategies.

3. What should I expect during my first session?

You can expect your first session to be 60 minutes. In your first session, we will discuss your reasons for seeking therapy and any specific concerns or goals you may have. We will also begin getting to know each other, go over consents and important paperwork, as well as review assessments. This is also an opportunity for you to ask any questions about the process and ensure that you feel comfortable with your therapist. The session will be a safe, confidential space for you to express yourself without judgment.

4. How long does each session last?

Most individual sessions are 45 minutes, and couples sessions are 60 minutes. Some sessions may run a little longer depending on your needs and the nature of the work being done.

5. How often will I need to attend therapy?

The frequency of sessions depends on your individual needs and goals. Some clients attend weekly sessions, while others may benefit from biweekly or monthly visits. We can discuss the best schedule for you based on your needs.

6. Is therapy confidential?

Yes, confidentiality is a fundamental part of the therapeutic process. What you share in sessions remains private unless you give written consent to release information. There are a few exceptions, such as if I believe there is a risk of harm to yourself or others. I will always explain these limits of confidentiality during your first session.

7. Do you accept insurance?

I accept many major insurance plans, but coverage varies by provider and policy. Please contact my office or check with your insurance company to confirm whether your plan covers counseling services with me. I can also provide a receipt for reimbursement if needed.

8. What should I do if I need help between sessions?

If you’re experiencing a crisis or urgent need for support, please reach out to me as soon as possible, and I may be able to offer additional resources. If you need help outside of business hours, contact a crisis helpline, such as the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline (988) or Crisis Text Line (Text HOME to 741741).

9. How do I make an appointment?

To schedule an appointment, simply email me at [email protected], or complete the form on the Contact page. I will help you find a time that works best for you.

10. What if I need to cancel or reschedule my appointment?

I understand that life happens! If you need to cancel or reschedule an appointment, please give me at least 24 hours’ notice to avoid a cancellation fee. You can reschedule via the Patient Portal, or email me and I would be happy to find a new time that works for you.

11. How do I access my Portal account?

You can access your confidential Patient Portal account 24/7 at https://www.therapyportal.com/p/nicolekauk/

12. What is the cost of therapy?

Therapy costs vary depending on the type of session. I offer competitive rates, and I can provide a detailed breakdown of costs during your initial consultation. I do not offer sliding scale fees.

13. Do you offer online counseling or telehealth sessions?

Yes! I offer secure, confidential online counseling via video, accessed via your Patient Portal. This is a great option for clients who may not be able to attend in person due to distance, schedule, or health concerns.

14. What if I don’t feel a connection with my therapist?

It’s important that you feel comfortable and understood in therapy. If you feel like the fit isn’t right, please let your therapist know. We can either adjust the approach or help you find a different therapist who might be a better fit.

15. How do I know if therapy is working?

Therapy is a process, and progress can look different for everyone. Some clients start to feel relief after just a few sessions, while for others, it may take longer. You and your therapist will regularly check in on your goals and the progress you’re making, and you can always bring up any concerns or changes you’re noticing.

16. Can I look at your policies?

Of course! Here is a link to the Notice of Privacy Practices, Consent for Services, and Heritage Health (NE Medicaid) Rights and Responsibilities. If you wish to see more, or have questions, please contact me.

17. What is your licensure?

Absolutely! I am licensed in Nebraska as a Licensed Independent Mental Health Practitioner (NE License #2662), Licensed Mental Health Practitioner (NE License #4471) and Professional Counselor (NE License #2175). You can view those here: LIMHP, LMHP, PC.
